What's Warm and Gold and 50,000 Years Old?

Ancient Kauri Snare Drums from the Stanbridge Drum Company.

Recently unearthed in Northern New Zealand, Ancient Kauri is the oldest known workable timber in the world. Perfectly preserved in an acidic peat swamp, these mammoth logs rested undisturbed for 50,000 years - surviving intact through the last Ice Age until their discovery in 1987.

The depth of figure in these shells is stunning, and the sound was among my happiest surprises. Warm and pleasing in tone, the low fundamental of the Ancient Kauri contributes to a rich and controlled resonance which makes this an ideal instrument for a wide range of musical situations.
