Our client wanted a high pitched staccato sounding drum which retained some bottom end to the voice to compliment his latin percussion setup. I recommended this configuration of African Bubinga in smaller but taller than average dimensions.

The Bubinga is pitched to cut through timbales and the 13 inch size still allows for a clave-like cross stick, but the dead centre snare drum sound is fat enough for either ballads or pop. A Power Center Reverse Dot head is a very versatile way to bring down overtones without a lot of external muffling.

This drum was recently joined by a pair of matching Bubinga mini-timbales with Pau Ferro hoops. These are 10 and 12 inches in diameter by 4.5 inches deep, and I fabricated a solid brass Cascara plate for the larger drum. Most recently, we have added a 16 by 14 inch bass drum in Bubinga, and an 8 by 8 inch tom to this expanding percussion rig. More coming soon too - I’ll keep you posted.
