African Blackwood

Crafted from solid African Blackwood (Mpingo) from Tanzania, this instrument derives its high fundamental pitch and satisfying resonance from the incredible density and hardness of the timber. Used as the primary tonewood in the construction of premium clarinets, oboes and bagpipes, Blackwood is a delight to work and takes a beautiful natural polish. Because of these qualities and Mpingo's ability to withstand moisture changes, we are able to send out these instruments - both shell and hoops - completely unfinished.

At 14" by 5.25" by .5 inches thick, this particular drum was built with versatility in mind. The lugs are black chrome tubes, and the Nickel throwoff is attached to stainless steel Canopus wires.

Stanbridge Drum Company makes a donation to the African Blackwood Conservation Project for each instrument produced from this remarkable timber resource.
