Brazilian Mahogany and African Blackwood

We were going for a fat, warm and resonant sounding drum with enough bite to be useful in amplified, acoustic and close miked studio applications. The natural low pitch of the Mahogany provides the warmth and body, while a sharper bearing edge profile resulted in amazing sensitivity and articulation.

Our client suggested the Mahogany and Blackwood hoop combination which added an aggressive edge to the rimshot sound without being out of character by being too bright.

Left: When deciding on the overall design
of an instrument, we will often mock up the shell
and hoops to give the client a better idea
of the final piece. While we still made some changes,
you can see how the finished drum derives from this model.
